John Borne wrote the historical study, USS LIBERTY: Public History vs. Dissenting History, for his doctoral dissertation at New York University where he received his Ph.D in 1993. He has taught American History as adjunct professor at Baruch and Pace Colleges in New York City. While searching for a dissertation topic, he read James Ennes' book ASSAULT ON THE LIBERTY(Random House1979) with Ennes' remarkable claim that Israel had deliberately attacked a US Naval ship. Ennes had been an officer on the ship at the time of the attack. Dr. Borne was curious to know how such a challenging book would be refuted and how such an important book would be reviewed. He was surprised to find that ASSAULTwas largely ignored. The WASHINGTON POSTwhere Captain Lloyd Bucher of the USS PUEBLO, a sister ship of the Liberty, gave the book a favorable notice, was the only large newspaper in the US to review Ennes' book. Borne concluded that there had been little serious debate on a topic
of great importance. He continues to write about the Liberty with
the hope that the subject will be examined more fully, rationally and
without prejudice.
